Golf season is upon us, and a friend asked me about clubs this morning so I came up with this list.
BMW/Mercedes/Audi tier - The Ultimate Driving Machines : Titleist, Ping, Taylor Made, Mizuno
Cadillac/Infiniti/Volvo tier - Inspired Performance : Nike, Adams, Callaway, Cobra, Cleveland
Chevy/Kia/Mazda tier - Like (hitting) a Rock:
Wilson Staff, Tour Edge, Lynx, MacGregor, Top Flite

I’m a Titleist guy, so I agree wholeheartedly with your rankings. If you were ranking golf balls, it would be Titleist in the top group, and everybody else down below...can't beat a ProV1.

I’d argue Callaway is more TM than Nike. At least that is how I always perceived it

I’ve had a set of Titleists (Driver + irons) for around 3 years that I got custom fit for... if you’re an avid golfer I wouldn’t buy any clubs without a proper fitting by a pro. HUGE difference.
To be honest though, most of them make pretty good sets these days... lots of help for the hacker.

I have a set of MacGregor’s and they are damn good, they are the Mazda 6 of the golf world, Very good but don’t have the name reputation of Nike, Titleist, Taylormade etc.

Callaway makes great clubs for high handicap players, their skilled irons are shit... that’s why I made them 2nd tier.

If you only play occasionally for fun, all of these guys make serviceable clubs and you won’t notice any difference in performance.

I was unaware. Now this:
Odyssey putters deserve top marks

I think at a certain point it comes down to personal preference. I just finished my fourth year of DII golf and Ive got a mixed bag of clubs. I love/use Taylor Made irons and wedges, Nike woods, a Cobra driver and a original Ping Anser putter thats significantly older than me.

Putters are wild cards to me. Just find something that looks good to your eye and gives you confidence standing over a 4 footer. I’ve been alternating between a Never Compromise putter and a Taylor Made depending on how shitty I putted the last round.

The Ping Anser putter is the e30 M3 of the golf world. I’ve got one in my garage too. And yes, confidence and feel in your hand trumps brand name.

Now that Im finished with getting paid to play Im really looking forward to being able to enjoy golf again.

As long as the putter has a good weight and wasn’t bought at a putt putt course you are golden

Ya me and my buddies mostly drink and a round of golf breaks out in the middle

Agreed. I prefer center-shafted mallets.

Tournament golf is not usually fun. Those 5 footers for par stress me the fuck out.

This. Exactly.

I still say Golfkhana needs to be a thing.

I don’t play often, but when I do, I always use my Great-Step-Dad Hickory clubs.
Wood is much better at transmitting the ball feel.

That’s how I roll.
The true essence of Golfing, my friend.

Exactly. Much like in cars, where nobody really makes a bad car (except maybe Mitsubishi), nobody makes a bad golf club.
My uncle works for Titleist, so I get a) stupid deals on clubs/bags, and b) all the ProV1s I can shank. I've got to get fitted this year though, I hit my off the shelf stuff pretty good, but I'd like to be better.

If that’s the E30 M3, any idea what mine would be? It's a Bullseye from the 40s I got from gramps, and that's about all I know. I'm too awful at golf to tell if it's halfway usable, but it sure looks neat.

I’ve had Ping S57 irons for a while, I’ve been thinking of upgrading to new a new set of Ping or Titleist. Might need to do it this summer.
![]() 04/29/2015 at 15:16 |

Those are fairly “player” oriented, aren’t they?
![]() 04/29/2015 at 15:22 |
|
The S57s? Not sure if I get what you mean...If you’re referring to skill level, they are not as unforgiving as some other blades, but definitely not a club for beginners. If referring to set up, any club can be customized to the player and I’d highly recommend it.
![]() 04/29/2015 at 15:26 |

Yeah I believe those are more tailored to low handicap players. What do you typically shoot?
![]() 04/29/2015 at 15:33 |

They are but at the time they were closer to a middle of the road blade, they had a couple others that were more geared to low handicap and scratch golfers. Depends on the day, usually between 80 and 85.

That focus and thrill from doing well in tournaments is tough to beat with your buddies on the weekend, but much less stressful obviously. Usually $20 makes it competitive enough.
I’ve played some of my best and most humiliating golf in tournament rounds.

Also Cobra makes a helluva driver. I bought my wife one for her birthday last year. Their irons and mostly crap.

I only ended up with a Cobra because I was looking for a new driver and my grandfather had just bought a Cobra and couldn’t swing it fast enough so he just gave it to me. I hit a couple of dead straight bombs with it in his field and was hooked. As or irons I wouldn’t go for anything thats not Taylor Made, Titleist or Mizuno.
